THE BAMBOO HOUSE

The Bamboo House Built in 1966 by architect Horace Gifford, The Bamboo House began as a modernist retreat for Paul McGregor, the legendary hairdresser to the stars. After retiring to Fire Island Pines, McGregor turned inward, dedicating his days to making art and slowly transforming the house itself into an immersive bamboo environment. What started as a home became a personal, evolving artwork—part architecture, part archive of lived creativity.

Today, The Bamboo House is undergoing a careful revamping led by a new generation of designers. Working collaboratively, the project approaches the house not as a fixed historical object but as a living structure, one that invites continuation rather than preservation alone. Each intervention responds to McGregor’s original spirit of experimentation, extending his legacy through contemporary design, craft, and collective making.
